Wildlife safari
Kangerlussuaq has a unique location in Greenland for fauna safari. With the fjord on one side and the ice on the other, the settlement is the most open ice-free landscape in all of Greenland. This makes it a perfect place for wildlife. Both reindeer and musk oxen thrive here, as the area has plenty of food and ideal weather conditions.
On the fauna safari we set off through the fascinating tundra landscape. During the fauna safari, the guide will talk about the beautiful nature of the area and the history behind it. If you’re lucky, you might see musk oxen on the trip, but of course there are no guarantees. On the tour, we also look for other wildlife in the area. There will also be plenty of opportunities to enjoy the vegetation in the area, including the dense willow thickets on the rocky slopes and the beautiful rivers and streams.
Kangerlussuaq’s history goes back around 2.8 billion. years ago. We know that at least once the area has been completely covered in ice all the way to the coast of Sisimiut. We can see this because of the moraine deposits in the area. The mountain landscape in Kangerlussuaq is, in a geological context, worn down by ice over the years.
We will move up in altitude on the tour as we head towards an area that the Americans have called Tacan. Here we will get a great view of the valleys and rivers. We can also see both Kangerlussuaq and the ice cap. On the fauna safari, we make several stops to enjoy the fresh air and take pictures of the unforgettable surroundings.
